Colombian Leader Warns 'I Will Return to Arms Again' should American Forces Launches an Attack.

The US President and President Gustavo Petro have turned up the rhetoric in their verbal conflict, increasing tensions in their relations following American military units targeted Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He has narcotics facilities and processing labs and his time is running out," Trump added.

Escalating Rhetoric coupled with Allegations

Talking to journalists on Sunday, the US president hinted at similar military action against Bogotá, claiming the nation faces serious problems and governed by a problematic figure who likes making cocaine and trafficking it to the US."

While Colombia is the leading source of the narcotic, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly connected to the trade.

A Frayed Alliance

This nation for decades served as a key ally of the United States in the struggle against drug trafficking and benefited from cross-party backing in Washington, yet ties have soured markedly following Trump assumed the presidency.

Its narcotics trade is predominantly run by guerrilla factions including the Clan del Golfo, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the demobilized Farc, most of its former fighters demobilised following a historic peace agreement.

The President's Firm Rebuttal

When asked whether military intervention similar to Venezuela was on the cards regarding Colombia, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea to me."

Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who left armed struggle in the 1990s, firmly denied the accusations. "I am not illegitimate and I am not a narco," he declared.

"He comments without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he expressed in a post.

"If they [the US] bomb civilians, they will become numerous insurgents across the countryside. And if they detain the nation's leader, whom many of the country holds in high esteem, they will release the powerful force of the people," Petro warned.

From Guerrilla to Leader

Petro spent part of his youth participating with the radical M-19 guerrilla group though it is believed to have ever participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he took part in creating a new constitution in the early 90s and later became an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of the Colombian capital before being elected the nation's highest office.

"I pledged not to touch a weapon again ... but for Colombia I shall resume arms again," he said.

Reinforced Protection along with Widespread Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the national leader's protection team was strengthened.

A segment of Colombia’s conservative opposition have allied themselves with Trump, but voices from across the ideological divide have condemned the notion of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Diplomatic and Economic Sanctions

American authorities revoked the president's entry visa following he called on US military personnel to ignore any illegal orders. Months later, it placed economic restrictions on Petro, his wife and a number of key allies.

Concurrently while America bolstered its military presence near Venezuela and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed attacks on boats off the Pacific coast adjacent to Colombia.
