The artist has given the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize winnings to the MVT, which operates to save the UK's grassroots concert spaces.

He was awarded the cheque on mid-October as his latest record People Watching was named the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

The musician has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part small stages fulfilled in his initial steps.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the gigs I did around the area, and beyond, when I was starting out," said Sam Fender. "These venues are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these locations have permanently closed – about one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, well-known musicians such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

Sam Fender also took part, generating more than £100,000 on his live tour to help 38 small stages across Britain.

The money assisted spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to difficulties arising from floods, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, court cases and noise complaints.

Some locations obtained monetary aid in modernizing amenities and gear that helped performers and audiences.

"The idea that money from performances in big venues backs the local stages, where it begins for musicians like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has stated.

Fender is far from the only musician to contribute his Mercury Prize funds to worthy causes.

In the band won the award in 1996 for their record Different Class, lead singer the singer stated that the band would donate their cash to the non-profit War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer the artist divided her prize between a few charities, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I contributed a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they required new equipment," she shared with outlets.

In recent years, the band gave their funds to the local youth club that nurtured their act, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

And 1994 winners M People donated their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was identified with the illness.

"The victory was ample," remarked singer Heather Small. "The money was the extra but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the cake. So our victory impacted another person's life."

Last week, the MVT shared it had rescued a couple of small stages in south-east England, by placing them under community ownership.

The Joiners in Southampton and the second in that location were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is funded by the arts council and enthusiasts who acquire "stakes" in the properties.
