Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes are granted the right to contest specific calls from the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
